THE MOST ADVENTUROUS GRAVEL RIDE IN THE SEA OTTER EUROPE SPORT PROGRAMME

When, in the early hours of the morning in the summer of 2014, Jordi Cantal set out alone to complete the 340-km Pirinexus Challenge route, little did he know that, once finished, late at night, he would have created a new challenge that has since become the stuff of legends.

The Canyon Pirinexus Challenge will take place on Saturday 25 September as part of the international Sea Otter Europe Costa Brava-Girona by Continental festival and is one of the most prestigious and renowned gravel races in Europe. Fans of the sport come from all over the continent to try it at least once in their lives, while for others it is a must every year.

The cycling challenge spans 340 km and 3,000 m of elevation gain across 18 hours, returning to Girona before sunset. The routes passes along the coast and inland through the counties of Girona as well as crossing the border into southern France through the Pyrenees. The adventure starts at six in the morning (at sunrise) right next to the festival site and finishes in the evening, or at night, as the case may be.

Registration

The registration fee includes the right to participate in the race, the race bib and a route profile and logbook. It also includes refreshments, medical assistance and a rescue service during the race as well as the finisher’s trophy, plus an extra finisher’s trophy for those who complete the route before sunset.

For this edition there are two price options: registration for €90.00 (VAT included) not including the jersey, or €120.00 (VAT included) including the jersey. Participants also have the option of taking out a day licence at a cost of €5.00 if they do not have a federation licence. On 25 September the great cycling challenge that is the Sea Otter Europe Costa Brava – Girona by Continental festival will once again return. Remember that registration opens on 20 April, 2021, and places are very limited!

An event as part of the Sea Otter Europe cycling festival

The Canyon Pirinexus Challenge is part of the Sea Otter Europe festival, Europe’s leading cycling festival, which will take place in the city of Girona on 24, 25 and 26 September, 2021.

In just a few years of existence, the festival has managed to achieve astonishing figures: 60,000 visitors, over 6,000 participants in sporting events and a total of over 350 exhibiting brands, according to last year’s figures.

Sea Otter Europe embarks on its fifth edition with a full sports programme with events for professional competitors and amateurs, an expo zone with the best brands on the market, demo circuits perfect for testing out gravel bikes and having a good time, and a host of activities dedicated exclusively to cycling professionals.
